Canadian-Chinese pianist Sophia Liu was born in Shanghai on October 10, 2008. She moved to Japan when she was 2 years old and immigrated to Canada at the age of 7. She currently lives in Montreal and is now studying with Prof. Dang Thai Son.
Sophia started learning the piano at the age of 4. She is a prizewinner of many international competitions. Her recent awards include the 1st Prize in Category A at the 18th Ettlingen International Piano Competition in Germany, the 1st Prize at the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in the USA, as well as the 2nd Prize, Youngest Semifinalist Prize and Audience Prize at the first edition of the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli International Piano Competition in Italy.
Sophia has given many recitals and concerts around the world, regularly performing in North and South Americas, Asia and Europe. She has shared the stage with famous pianists and collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including the Orchestre Symphonique de l’Isle, the Tolima Music Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Bazzini Consort Orchestra, and the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra. She has been featured on several media including NBC and ABC News, Colombian National Television, and Polish and Italian newspapers. Sophia has recently published her debut CD album which features live recordings from a competition in Europe.
In 2024, Sophia gave performances at the Duszniki International Chopin Festival in Poland, the Festival International de Piano de La Roque d’Anthéron in France, and the International “Chopin and his Europe” Festival in Warsaw, Poland, where she was invited to step in for the great Ingrid Fliter in a recital. She also gave concerts in prominent venues such as the Hyogo Prefectural Arts and Culture Center (Kobe, Japan), Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall, Taipei National Concert Hall, and Hanoi Opera House.
Sophia’s upcoming projects include recitals and concerts in Paris, Geneva, Vancouver, New York City, Seoul, Tokyo, as well as performances with several orchestras, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
